If you're studying anything plastics-related (engineering, design, manufacturing), SPE Student Membership costs you nothing, as long as you're part of an SPE Student Section. MTD is where the moldmaking and mold design side of the trade lives, and there's real scholarship and grant funding behind it.

Student Membership Is Free, Through a Student Section

Membership is free for students who belong to an SPE Student Section, a chapter based at your school. That's a requirement, not just the common path: if your school doesn't have one yet, MTD can help you start one. Check the Student Member Directory to see if your school already has a section, or reach out to moldtechnologiesdiv@outlook.com for help establishing one.

MTD Scholarship: For Students

MTD names its annual scholarship in honor of individuals who've shaped the moldmaking and mold design industry. The name changes each year with the new sponsor.

2027 nameThe Thomas Nahodil Scholarship, honoring Tom Nahodil, a long-time advocate of the mold making industry in Cleveland/Akron/Northeast Ohio and personal mentor to mold designers currently practicing their craft in the area.

Eligibility

No SPE membership required

Open to anyone enrolled in a plastics-related program.

Special consideration

Apprentice → degree

For apprentices converting their program into a two- or four-year degree.

Also considered

Grad students

MS/PhD applicants in plastics tooling or molding.

Beyond the annual named scholarship above, MTD also endows dedicated scholarships for students in the Plastics Technology programs at three schools:

MTD Grants: For Programs & Organizations

Separate from the individual student scholarship, MTD also funds grants for specific programs or projects: school programs, training centers, or other organizational initiatives serving the moldmaking and mold design field. Requests must be submitted before the funds are spent, with a clear explanation of the program's goals, industry contribution, leadership, and financial need.

Deadline: April 30, each year. Same recurring date as the scholarship.

Student Work

Mold design capstone courses, like the one at UMass Lowell, take students from part design through building the actual aluminum tooling and molding real parts, all within a single semester.
